Let’s Talk Tungsten Halogen Heating Lamps
If you’re running industrial ovens or curing systems, you know that getting heat where it needs to be—fast—is the whole game. That’s where these tungsten halogen lamps come in. Basically, we take a tungsten filament, tuck it inside a quartz envelope, and fill the whole thing with halogen gas. Why? Because it stops the filament from evaporating too quickly. It means we can crank the temperature way higher than you’d ever dare with a regular light bulb. The Heat Factor The amount of heat you get really comes down to how you pair your wattage and voltage. Here’s the thing: if you go with a high-voltage setup, you can push more power through a thinner filament. That spikes the surface temperature and gives you a concentrated blast of short-wave infrared (SWIR) radiation. It doesn’t just warm the air; it sinks right into your materials. It’s incredibly fast. But a word of caution. If you cram too much wattage into a tiny space, you’re going to bake your oven housing. Make sure your cooling fans can actually handle the heat rise, or you’ll have a bad time. The Build We stick with quartz glass because it’s a beast. You can hit it with extreme thermal shock and it won’t just shatter. Depending on what you’re doing, we can add a special coating to bounce the heat back toward your workpiece or filter out specific wavelengths. As for the plugs, we usually use R7s or Sk15 bases. They’re standard, so they should slide right into your existing sockets. Plus, they fit tight. You don’t want your lamps rattling or sparking while the machine is vibrating. Real-World Use You’ll see these all over PET blowing machines and drying tunnels. In those worlds, every second counts. These lamps hit their operating temp almost instantly, which keeps your cycle times lean. But there is a catch. Quartz is picky. If you touch the glass with your bare hands during installation, the oils from your skin create a “hot spot.” That’s a one-way ticket to a premature burnout.
