A Real-World Look at 240V 1600W Halogen Infrared Lamps
If you’re dealing with heavy thermal loads and you can’t afford to sit around waiting for your equipment to warm up, these lamps are your best bet. We built these using a tungsten filament inside a quartz tube filled with halogen gas. The result? Shortwave infrared radiation. Basically, instead of wasting time heating up the air around the part, the heat punches straight through the material. It’s direct. It’s fast. The Power Side of Things Pushing 1600W at 240V puts a lot of heat in a very small space. The best part is the response time—these things hit their operating temperature almost the second you flip the switch. Most of the time, they’re a simple drop-in replacement for your old industrial heaters. Just a heads-up: since they pull 240V, double-check your wiring and contactors. You don’t want to find out the hard way that your terminals can’t handle the current. How They’re Built You might wonder why we use the halogen cycle. It’s simple: it stops the tungsten from gunking up the inside of the tube. This keeps the glass clear so your heat output stays steady for the long haul. We went with quartz because it can take the shock of being turned on and off rapidly without cracking. Most of these slide right into standard R7s or spring-loaded sockets. If you go with a coated version, the heat gets pushed forward. This makes the target surface get hot even faster, but keep in mind that the lamp housing will run hotter too. Where They Actually Work (And Where to Be Careful) You’ll see these all over the place in PET blowing, plastic welding, and paint curing. They’re a huge relief compared to resistive heating elements that take forever to ramp up. It makes your PID temperature control feel much snappier. But here’s the thing… 1600W in a tiny tube is a lot of energy. If your cooling fans quit or your housing is too cramped, you’re going to cook your wiring. Seriously. Make sure you have plenty of airflow, or you’ll be looking at melted sockets.
