
Let’s talk about getting those halogen lamps right
Here is the deal with halogen heating lamps: they aren’t your average lightbulbs. By trapping a tungsten filament inside a quartz tube with a specific halogen gas mix, we stop the filament from burning out too quickly. This lets us crank up the heat way higher than you’d get with standard infrared bulbs. It’s built for those moments when you need a massive burst of heat, and you need it now. The balance of power and voltage You’ve got to think about your heat density. If you go with a high-voltage setup—say 230V or 400V—you can push a lot more wattage through a short tube without frying your leads. If you’re setting up a line for PET blowing or curing plastics, your wattage has to dance perfectly with your line speed. More wattage means things heat up faster. That’s great, but it puts a lot of pressure on your power supply. Just make sure your wiring can actually handle the draw, or you’re going to see some nasty burnout at the terminals. The build: Quartz and connectors We use high-purity quartz for the outer shell because it can take a beating from extreme temperature swings without cracking. Some of our lamps even have special coatings. These basically “steer” the heat, making sure it hits your material instead of just warming up the air around it. As for the plug, we usually stick with R7s or Sk15 connectors. They’re simple, drop-in replacements for most industrial ovens. They fit tight and secure, but do me a favor: check the pins for oxidation every few months during your routine maintenance. It saves a lot of headaches later. The trade-off These lamps pack a huge punch in a tiny space. That’s a win for your floor plan, but it comes with a catch: the heat is incredibly concentrated. If your reflectors are even slightly off, or if your cooling fans are feeling lazy, you’ll end up baking your own machine housing. It’s a real risk. To keep the heat hitting your workpiece evenly, I’d suggest a quick alignment check every 500 hours. It only takes a minute, and it keeps everything running smooth.
