
Getting Your Powder Coating Cure Right: The Truth About IR
If you’re running a powder coating line, you already know the oven is where everything slows down. It’s the bottleneck. Most shops just blast hot air around the room, but that’s slow and, frankly, a waste of money. We do things differently. We use short-wave infrared (IR) lamps. Instead of waiting for the air to get hot, the lamps hit the part directly. It changes how the heat works—instead of just baking the surface, the heat actually sinks into the piece. The deal with watt density When you’re picking out your lamps, you’ll see “watt density” on the spec sheet. Basically, if you pack a lot of wattage into a short lamp, you get an intense field of energy. This is great because your powder hits that gel point in seconds. Your line moves faster. Your output goes up. But there’s a catch. If your conveyor timing is off by even a few seconds, you can scorch the finish. It happens fast. That’s why you can’t just “set it and forget it”—you need tight control over your zones. Picking the right gear We stick with quartz glass envelopes. Why? Because they let the IR radiation through without soaking it up. Some of our lamps have special coatings that push the heat even deeper into the metal. This stops “skinning.” You know that annoying thing where the top layer cures instantly and traps solvents underneath? Yeah, this stops that from happening. Actually putting it in your shop Getting these lamps into your current setup is usually pretty straightforward. They just drop right in. The main thing we look at is the footprint—making sure the lamps cover as much of the part as possible. One heads-up: check your electrical panels. When these lamps ramp up, they pull a massive amount of current. If your wiring is too thin, you’re going to be tripping breakers the second you hit the power switch. At the end of the day, cutting a cure time from 20 minutes down to 5 isn’t about some fancy theory. It’s about spending less on electricity and getting more parts out the door every single day.
