Getting the Most Out of Ruby Quartz Halogen Lamps
If you’ve ever dealt with standard quartz tubes failing under pressure, you know the frustration. That’s why we use ruby quartz. Now, the red color isn’t just for looks. It’s there to filter the light, making sure the heat actually sinks into your material instead of just scorching the surface. It’s all about getting the heat where it needs to go without ruining the part.
The Power Side of Things
These lamps are built for speed. If you need to hit high temperatures fast, you’re looking at high-wattage setups. When we bump up the voltage—think 230V or 400V—we’re essentially packing more power into every millimeter of the tube. This is great because it saves space in your oven. But here’s the catch: high wattage means a heavy pull on your electricity. Make sure your wiring and power supply can actually handle it, or you’ll be replacing burnt-out contacts a lot sooner than you’d like.
What’s Actually Inside?
We use a halogen cycle to keep things clean. Without it, the tungsten filament would just evaporate and coat the inside of the tube in a foggy mess. The halogen keeps the glass clear and makes the lamp last much longer. The ruby quartz itself is a beast. It can take a serious beating, especially if you’re flicking the power on and off constantly. For the fit, we usually go with R7s or Sk15 connectors. They slide right into most industrial heating banks. Just a tip:**keep those contacts spotless.**If rust or oxidation creeps in at the terminal, you’ll get localized overheating, and the lamp will die prematurely.
The Trade-offs
These lamps put out a massive amount of heat. Because of that, you can’t ignore your cooling system. If the air around the lamp ends gets too hot, you’re going to fry your sockets. They’re fantastic for heating PET or polymers, but you have to be precise. If your lamp is off by just a few millimeters, you’ll end up with “hot spots”—those annoying uneven patches on your finished product. Precision is everything here.
